Hot Box
Treehouse sauna for Woodland Workshop
Alongside a group of 14 other Design Products students from the Royal College of Art, Smeeing camped out in the Somerset countryside with the aim of building various on-site structures. The group used salvage timber from the 2014 graduation show to complete two full-group collaborative projects: a swimming platform spanning two trees over the mill pond and a fully-functioning treehouse sauna.
The Hot Box was built in only 5 days and cradled within a beech tree. The treehouse sauna featured a wood burning stove that heated a collection of stones taken from the river. The stove was built from an old steel bin and milk urn. The team also salvaged a large glass panel from a barn on the property and restored wooden floor tiles that once lined a local church. The swimming platform was fabricated using only glue and ratchet straps.
