Neighbourhood cinema for Utrecht Manifest
During his internship at Studio Makkink & Bey, Smeeing was responsible for the Buurtbios. A second hand electrical car was transformed into a neighbourhood cinema as a means to construct and reinforce social structured. The Buurtbios screened its first movie Friday July 6th 2012 as part of Utrecht Manifest and kept on displaying movies during Vrede van Utrecht 2013.
In the Black Maria, the world’s first movie production studio by Thomas Edison, Smeeing found his inspiration for the design of the mobile cinema. The concept behind the Buurtbios is an electric vehicle that would support all electric devices with its internal battery, creating a mobile cinema without external electricity needed.
