Interventions in the public space
The community interest company Made Public commissioned Smeeing to create temporary interventions for the high street in Romford. Funded by the Mayor of London’s High Street Fund, the aim of the project was to activate the high street and in particular South Street. As project manager and designer, Smeeing was responsible for the initial research, design, development and launch of the temporary interventions called Platforms.
As temporary interventions, the Platforms provided an experience that worked as a catalyst, inviting people to use the high street in unexpected and new ways. Whilst being eye-catching and fun, these interventions provided exciting social spaces for small- scale meetings. As platforms they welcomed everyday events to activate their meaning. As well as functioning as spaces for dwelling, the Platforms were accompanied by a month long programme of events and activities created in collaboration with local cultural partners.

The design of the mobile units draws inspiration from Romford’s history as a market town. The units have a robust mobile base and a steel frame structure that reflects the aesthetic of market stalls. Different interior configurations will allow the units to be used for a variety of events and activities. Outside the use for programmed events and activities, the units offered a sense of privacy in the public space. The portable units invited informal use and provide spaces for more intimate and small-scale gatherings in the high street.
