The movie 'Metropolis' and a study trip to New York City formed the basis of this light object with two light sources. Reflections of sunlight on other buildings in the shaded streets of Manhattan [day] formed the inspiration for one part of the lamp. The view of the Empire State Building during night was inspiring the second part of the lamp. Manhattan lost it's perspective by night and became a field of glittering warm light shining out of the skyscraper windows [night]. With this light object I wanted to recreate the experience I had when visiting the city in a small scale.
The light object contains a halogen spot that is pointed at the wall. Light reflects on the vertical strokes of textile, metal and plastic and creates a pattern of shadows on the wall. You can create your own composition and light effect by changing the position of the strokes [day]. To create a different atmosphere the halogen can be turned off and fire can be made with bioethanol in the horizontal reservoir. Twinkling fire can be seen through the horizontal punched sheet metal. You can experience the warmth of the city [night].
